Psycho-social services
The mental health and psycho-social services is offered by our partner Psychology Beyond Barriers, coordinated by the CEO, Mr. Ekemine Umoh and supported by Mr. James Sunday Robson. This service aims at improving resilience among our trainees while helping to improve their learning abilities. Available evidence has shown that mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for refugees are crucial due to the high prevalence of mental health issues among displaced populations. Refugees often face traumatic events, social insecurity, and past trauma history, leading to some developing psychological problems that can severely impact their psychological well-being. Providing appropriate MHPSS is essential and help to address these challenges, prevent isolation, aid reintegration and promote resilience, especially through education and community-based interventions such as those provided by Max Kuma Community Development Foundation for Cameroonian refugees in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria. Our approach includes group and individual counselling methods, whereby we focus on building resilience through cognitive restructuring methods, gratitude based interventions, psycho-education and taking away the stigma and discrimination around psychological challenges. Additionally, integrating Clinical Psychologists, social workers and other mental health professionals into MHPSS programs is vital as we offer culturally appropriate services to refugee populations and other vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the need for holistic care and community participation. Implementing MHPSS not only supports the mental health of refugees but also contributes to their successful integration and adjustment in new environments and enhances their learning potentials.
